Sally Henry Memorial Award Winner—2003

Lyn Cook

by Pat Moynihan-Morris

I am honoured present the 2003 Sally Henry Award to Lyn Cook, my friend, mentor and professional colleague.

Lyn is a professional Home Economist with over twenty-five years of diversified experience in many facets of our industry. Her accomplishments include appliance testing, consumer affairs, marketing and food service management.

Early in her career Lyn worked as a Food Service Manager, first at the University of Guelph, then at Simpsons-Sears.

The next ten years, while raising Jeff and Amy, Lyn worked as a freelance home economist. During this time she demonstrated her culinary and cooking techniques at trade and consumer shows, night school and in-home testing on small appliances, to name just a few.

Between the years 1990-95, Lyn was on contract as a consulting home economist for Inglis. At this point, Lyn applied for the senior home economist position at Whirlpool in the U.S.A. Lyn beat out the competition, and has been with Whirlpool since 1995, first at Dayton, then to Head Office in St. Joseph’s. Lyn has shown outstanding abilities to manage test kitchens, co-ordinate with the engineering and marketing departments. Lyn has put the “human touch” to appliances.

With her hectic and busy professional life, Lyn has always managed to balance work, family and volunteer commitments. Volunteer work for the Peel Separate Board, church involvement, and now her work with non-profit groups, veteran organizations. Her latest volunteer efforts have been with building homes for Habitat.

It was a great honour to present the Sally Henry Award to Lyn for her exemplary career. She has mentored many younger professional Home Economists. Linda Markle accepted the award on Lyn Cook’s behalf at the AGM dinner.
