OHEIB 5th Annual Student Meet & Greet
The 5th Annual OHIEB Student Meet & Greet was held on March 2nd, 2006 at Kraft Kitchens. Approximately 30 students from Western, Guelph and Ryerson braved the suburbs to tour the Kraft Kitchens and listen to our 4 amazing speakers; Jane Carman, Evelyn Hullah, Elizabeth Baird and Lanny Scholes.
Jane Carman – Director, Kraft Kitchens. After a fantastic tour of Kraft’s seven kitchens Jane shared with us her extensive corporate test kitchen experience. Top tips: 1) Be flexible, corporations change directions frequently. 2) Think with a global perspective. More and more companies are moving to global operations. 3) Excellent communication skills are a must. Increasingly advanced technology allows for non-stop communication across a global company: email, telephone, in-person meetings and teleconferences fill most days' work.
Evelyn Hullah – Vice-President of Cardinal Kitchens. Evelyn shared her food styling experience with us in an interactive way, with a tour of her diverse portfolio. Top tips: 1) In every freelance project you are selling your services for the next job. 2) Look professional at all times - this includes clothing and personal presentation. 3) Team work and project coordination skills are a must in the food styling business. Styling skill is equally as important as how well you work with the rest of the team. And each job involves a new team! Elizabeth Baird – Food Editor, Canadian Living Magazine. Elizabeth spoke about her long and full career writing about food and editing food publications. Top tips: 1) Learning languages and traveling help in any food career. 2) Familiarity with different cultures is always an asset. 3). If you want to do something you CAN do it. Anything is possible. Elizabeth is proof of this. In 1974 she published her first cookbook having no prior experience or formal education in food preparation or publishing. What she had was a lot of passion and a great attitude.
Lanny Scholes – Owner, Contract Testing Inc. Lanny amazed us all with her high energy and “can do” attitude. Never having just one job Lanny has accomplished many things in her career, from test kitchen coordination to teaching high school to nutrition counseling to running a successful sensory evaluation company. Top Tips: 1) Make use of technology - it allows you to do business on the golf course! 2) With a ‘can-do’ attitude anything is possible. Lanny didn’t set out to be a business owner, but the need was there for an independent sensory evaluation company so she filled it. Today Contract Testing has multiple sites throughout Canada and the US. 3) Be passionate about what you do and you will succeed.
